The 2023 Netflix movie Rebel Moon is a sci-fi epic about a young woman named Kora who recruits warriors from neighboring planets to defend against an attack. The movie is set in a fictional galaxy where the Imperium military threatens a farming colony on the moon Veldt. Kora is a former Imperium soldier who has found community on Veldt, but she must now venture on a quest to make a stand against the Imperium.
The movie is divided into two parts, with the first part titled A Child of Fire. It is described as a tale of revenge and insurgency, and some say it is similar in scale to Dune or Star Wars. The movie is rated PG-13 for sequences of strong violence, sexual assault, bloody images, language, sexual material, and partial nudity.
What is Rebel Movie based on?
Rebel Moon is an original story created by Zack Snyder, inspired by Star Wars and the works of Akira Kurosawa. The movie's logo is a homage to Heavy Metal magazines.
Snyder initially intended Rebel Moon as a Star Wars movie, pitching it to Lucasfilm as a more mature take on the franchise. However, the project began development as a Star Wars film that wasn't greenlit by Lucasfilm in 2012.
Snyder says the world of Rebel Moon leapt entirely from his imagination, from the planets to the set design to the very language itself.
Zack Snyder, the visionary filmmaker behind "Justice League" and "Man of Steel," is set to mesmerize audiences once again with his upcoming sci-fi epic, "Rebel Moon." The anticipated interstellar adventure, titled "Rebel Moon — Part One: A Child of Fire," unfolds on the isolated farming moon of Veldt, where a group of farmers faces a ruthless attack from the forces of the Motherworld.
In this space saga, Sofia Boutella takes on the lead role of Kora, a former Imperium soldier seeking a peaceful life on Veldt. However, her tranquility is shattered when the menacing Admiral Atticus Noble, played by Ed Skrein, arrives on Veldt under the orders of Balisarius, the tyrannical leader of the Imperium. Kora is compelled to confront her violent past as she assembles a group of warriors to defend Veldt against the unimaginable terror unleashed by Motherworld.
The genesis of "Rebel Moon" traces back to Snyder's film school days in the 1980s when he envisioned a space-bound narrative reminiscent of classics like "Magnificent Seven" or "Seven Samurai." Originally pitched to Kathleen Kennedy at Lucasfilm during the production of "Man of Steel" in 2012, the project took a different route when Disney acquired Lucasfilm, rendering Snyder's Star Wars-inspired vision obsolete.
Undeterred, Snyder found a home for "Rebel Moon" at Netflix, securing a two-part deal that freed the project from Star Wars ties. The film, now set for an R-rated presentation, promises an expansion of the cinematic universe, with both parts yet to reveal their explicit release dates.
As Snyder embarks on this galactic journey, "Rebel Moon" stands as a testament to his creative resilience and determination to bring his visionary concepts to life
